Velvet Vision - "Garden Apartment" | New Music

Back in late summer 2019, Minneapolis quintet Delilah Fang released their only EP, Lonely Once Too. Their song "Impostor Syndrome" caught my ear with its lovely groove and playful take on traditional dream pop sounds; I was immediately looking forward to what the band would do next. Much to my disappointment, the band dissolved shortly after the EP's release, with members moving away and pursuing other ventures.

Approximately a year-and-a-half later, I have found myself back within the Delilah Fang Cinematic Universe (or DFCU for short). Guitarist and vocalist Betty Taylor relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico and in the ensuing months has launched her solo project under the Velvet Vision moniker. She released a self-titled EP in March and has quickly followed it up with an understated and wonderful new single.

REVIEW: VELVET VISION RELEASE THEIR DEBUT SELF-TITLED SYNTH POP EP

by Kevin Flick - Puddlegum

Velvet Vision released their debut self-titled EP. This new project is the solo moniker of the very talented Santa Fe multi-instrumentalist Betty Taylor. She wrote and recorded everything on the synth pop EP, and Theo Krantz mixed and mastered the songs (Betty and Theo partner in an experimental orchestral duo called Et).

The EP opens with an electro pop song, I Was Such A Different Person Last Time, building on a patterned analog synth, a sawtooth bass line and glitch. A soft beat carries through the song, with layers of patterned synths filling the spectrum. A more prominent and rounded bass line comes in to underscore the melody. Betty’s vocals are layered with harmonies that are gently mixed into the tracks, running through a low-pass filter while being brightened with a soft reverb.

Velvet Vision’s Springtime Debut

There are some mornings, despite the cold, that you wake up before your alarm. You notice the sun streaking through the blinds, and you feel strangely ok. You sit around in your room, not sure what to do with this circadian sudden free time. So you put on some music. On this particular kind of day I receive an email from Betty Taylor AKA Velvet Vision about her forthcoming self titled debut. On this particular day I do not put the email off, even though winter makes literally every task feel impossible, and I listen to the EP. Velvet Vision is effervescent, effortless, gliding around my apartment. I think Taylor, raised in Minnesota now living in New Mexico, understands the need to find the sunlight adorned moments in life and how to hold them close. Taylor reminds us that we have gotten through the loveless months every year up until now and we will again. She understands nature and people alike can always thaw and resolve into something sweeter, “I was such a different person last time” she sings on the opening track.

Velvet Vision is the new synth pop project from Betty Taylor; a singer from Santa Fe, New Mexico. With the project’s first single Springtime Buzz timely released on the 11th March, Betty’s project is flowery and uplifting; sweet but not twee and with a hint of tongue in cheek, depressing honesty.

NEW SINGLES: BENEDIKT, TUVABAND, VELVET VISION, BROTHER.

by Kevin Flick - Puddlegum

Betty Taylor is a new artist releasing music under the moniker of Velvet Vision. Hailing from Santa Fe, New Mexico, she began working on this project during pandemic. This week she released her debut single, Springtime Buzz, which she tracked in her bedroom studio. Her sound is a fun mix of downtempo dream pop and analogue electro pop tones, with lush vocal harmonies.

Explaining the song, Betty shares that Springtime Buzz is about the “irrational nature of emotions… the kind of emotions that can make you sing ‘you’re just another boy who made me cry’ and ‘there was something in your eyes” in the same line.'”

It depends on where you live, but here in New York City, “Springtime Buzz” takes on more intensity every day. Add a romantic fling, and you have the perfect material for an upbeat pop song. Santa Fe-based musician Betty Taylor aka Velvet Vision took the cue and created a bright, glittering synth-pop tune that gets you in the mood, with or without romance. While being a musician for a long time, Betty took on electronic music production just a year ago and taught herself the necessary skills.
